Yellowstone Falls Sunrise

June 28, 2019, 5:40 AM — Photographing Yellowstone Falls at sunrise had eluded me for several years. I had always placed it near the top of my list of locations where I wanted to capture a gigapixel photograph. Finally, I was in the area with favorable weather conditions.

We got up at 3:45 AM to make the 45-mile drive from West Yellowstone to Artist Point in time for sunrise. Located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Artist Point offers one of the most spectacular views of the Lower Falls and the colorful canyon stretching into the distance. God blessed us with clear blue skies and a beautiful morning, without smoke or wind.

This was the first time I had witnessed a sunrise at Yellowstone Falls. I stood in awe as God painted the canyon with the warm light of the rising sun. From Artist Point, the canyon’s towering walls caught the early morning light, creating dramatic contrasts between the illuminated rock formations and the deep shadows below. The scene was a wonderful reminder of why this extraordinary landscape is called Yellowstone.

Photographic details: Captured with a Canon 5DS R and Canon 300mm lens at f/13, 1/160 second and ISO 160. The panorama consists of 200 individual photographs arranged in eight rows and 25 columns, stitched together to create the final image.
