Gigapixel FAQ’s
What is Gigapixel Photography?
Gigapixel photography is a photographic technique that combines hundreds or thousands of images into a single photograph exceeding one billion pixels in resolution.
How large can a gigapixel wall mural be printed?
Most all of my wall mural photos sizes are based on being printed at 300 PPI.
-
- A 1 gigapixel image at 300PPI is approximately 7 ft. x 10 ft.
- A 5 gigapixel image at 300PPI is 16 ft. x 24 ft.
- A 300PPI image viewed from 2 feet away will look tack sharp.
- Most wall mural printers use 150PPI which would double the above sizes. A 150PPI mural will look sharp from distances of 6 ft. or more.
- See this article for more information.
Why are gigapixel murals better than AI-enlarged photos?
What AI-enlargements do is utilize AI (I like to call it Artificial Ignorance) to create additional pixels in between the original pixels. The AI program makes a guess (SWAG) as to the luminance and color these new pixels should be and assigns the estimated values to the new pixels. The result is an image that has an out of focus or fuzzy appearance. It may look OK from 8-10 ft. but if you get up close it looks bad. This video provides a detailed example of why AI-enlarged images don’t work well for wall murals.
What industries use landscape wall murals?
Our customer base is vast, ranging from major corporations, hospitals, hotel chains and even prisons.
Can architects license your photography?
Yes, all of our photos are licensable. See our license prices here.
What is the largest photograph available on your website?
Currently my largest photo is a shot of Palouse Falls, LaCrosse, Washington. This photo is 15.78 gigapixels measuring 29 ft. 6 in. x 41 ft. 3 in. at 300 PPI. It can be viewed here.
