Sunrise Light On Eagle Falls at Emerald Bay

Oct. 7, 2025 — We were visiting our friends John and Val at their beach house on the west shore of Lake Tahoe for the week. The first day of our stay, they took us to see the sights along the shores of Lake Tahoe. This was one of the locations they took us to. A short hike from the road, I could see that this location had lots of potential for a sunrise photo. Using my PhotoPills app on my phone, I could see that the sun would rise directly behind the two trees, allowing for a shot with the sun shining through them.

Later in the day, while our spouses were shopping in Tahoe City, John and I walked into a photo gallery where the photographer had a sunrise photograph taken from the same exact spot, with the morning sunlight illuminating the little waterfall. Inspired by his photograph, I told John that I really needed to go back to this location for a sunrise photo. Three days later, we got up early and returned to this spot for the shot. With virtually no wind, I was able to capture this scene using focus stacking.

This panorama consists of 192 individual 45-megapixel focus-stacked images derived from 3,567 focus-bracketed photographs. It was photographed with a Canon R5 and Canon 100–400mm lens at 200mm, f/11, 1/250 sec. and ISO 400.
