Quileute First Beach Sunrise

September 19, 2025 — Wanting to photograph some of the well-known sea stacks along the Pacific coast, we booked into the Quileute First Beach RV Park for a two-night stay. On our first morning, I got up before sunrise and headed to the beach, where I found a large bank of fog approximately two miles offshore.

As the sun rose, it illuminated the fog bank with a beautiful pink glow. I wanted to include one of the huge driftwood logs in the foreground, so I selected a position that allowed me to capture the weathered wood, broad sandy beach, breaking waves, and distant sea stacks in a single panoramic composition.

The scene was photographed using my Canon EOS R5 Mark II with an RF 100–400mm lens set to 300mm. My exposure settings were f/11, 1/25 second, and ISO 100.

To capture the fine details of the driftwood, beach, ocean, and distant sea stacks, I recorded 2,031 individual exposures using focus bracketing. These were combined into 169 focus-stacked photographs, arranged in a seven-row by 23-column panoramic composition. Its wide 4:1 composition makes it particularly suitable for panoramic fine art prints and large-format wall murals.
