April 18, 2026 – Perched dramatically above the surging Pacific Ocean, Nugget Point Lighthouse is one of New Zealand’s most iconic coastal landmarks. Located near Kaka Point in the Catlins, this historic lighthouse has been guiding vessels safely around the rocky headland since 1870. It is one of the country’s oldest lighthouses perched above the famous rocks named by Captain Cook because they looked like pieces of gold.
The lighthouse itself is a classic white tower, standing proudly at the edge of a steep cliff, overlooking a scattering of wave-battered rocks known as “The Nuggets.” These sea stacks, shaped by time and tide, give the point its name and add to the area’s wild, cinematic beauty.
