June 7, 2023, 2:45 p.m. — Jean and I drove to this location with the intention of photographing the petroglyphs. Just as we arrived, it started pouring rain. We had to wait nearly two hours for the rain to stop. The overcast skies were ideal for photographing this wall of petroglyphs.

Newspaper Rock is perched just above the banks of Indian Creek in the eastern edge of the Bears Ears National Monument, a large, flat rock panel tucked beneath a small overhang. The site preserves the stories of people who lived in and passed through this area over many centuries. Long recognized as a special place by multiple cultures, Newspaper Rock was among the first sites in Utah to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The images at Newspaper Rock include animal pelts, figures riding horses, and broad-shouldered figures with elaborate headdresses. Close examination reveals numerous images of feet in six-toed forms. Paw and footprint designs are also evident throughout the panel. Many animals are represented, including deer, elk, bison, and bighorn sheep. One image appears to show a rider shooting an arrow at an elk or deer. One of my goals in creating this ultra-high-resolution photograph was to preserve a detailed visual record of the site for future generations.

This is a focus-stacked panorama photographed with a Canon EOS R5 and Canon 70–200mm lens at 200mm, f/11, 1/160 sec., ISO 800. It was created from 3,817 focus-bracketed photographs, processed into 203 focus-stacked images. The final panorama consists of 7 rows × 29 columns with approximately 30% overlap, photographed in portrait orientation.

  • We highly recommend Metalized Paper for prints, plaques and PlexiPlaq products. This special paper does an excellent job of bringing out the detail in the photographs.
  • All of our plaques are produced by Duraplaq on photo-quality high-density boards. Numerous mounting styles and edge treatments are available.
  • Approximate lead time for shipping prints is one to two weeks. Plaque mounts and other options are approximately three to four weeks.

The above sizes and mounting options are a small subset of the overall mounting options we offer. Our photographs are available as traditional prints, framed prints, plaque mounts, aluminum prints and PlexiPlaq. We also offer Tri-Panel, Quad-Panel, Wall Clusters & Splits, and many of our gigapixel photographs are available as wall murals. Commercial licensing is also available for a variety of applications.
