Moeraki Boulders Sunset
Koekohe Beach, Moeraki, New Zealand

April 15, 2026 – We had arrived in this area mid afternoon and we spent the evening scouting out the area. It was near the dark of the moon so low tide was expected to occur around 7pm, shortly after sunset, when the boulders are mostly out of the water. As we hiked down the beach to this spot it was mostly overcast and not that great of light. However, as we neared sunset some nice reds and oranges began to show on the distant horizon and was being reflected by the thin sheet of water on the beach where the waves were breaking. I decided to take a shot and was quite please with how it turned out.
The Moeraki Boulders (officially Moeraki Boulders / Kaihinaki) are unusually large spherical boulders lying along a stretch of Koekohe Beach on the wave-cut Otago coast of New Zealand between Moeraki and Hampden. They occur scattered either as isolated or clusters of boulders within a stretch of beach where they have been protected in a scientific reserve. These boulders are grey-colored septarian concretions, which have been exhumed from the mudstone and bedrock enclosing them and concentrated on the beach by coastal erosion.
