Lake Matheson 2026

April 25, 2026  – Lake Matheson was the second of two locations we revisited on this trip that we had also visited during our 2019 trip to New Zealand. While my 2019 version of this location remains my third-highest-earning photograph, it had one flaw: the reeds on the left side were slightly soft and out of focus. On this trip, I was determined to photograph the scene again, using focus stacking to create an image that is sharp from the foreground reeds through the distant landscape. Clouds and rain had been prominent the day before and earlier that morning. Finally, around 9:30 a.m., the clouds lifted briefly, and I was able to capture this image.

The original full-sized photograph was created from 1,790 focus-bracketed images, yielding 124 focus-stacked images arranged in a 4-row × 31-column array. I photographed the scene using my Canon R5 Mark II and RF 100–400mm zoom lens at 300mm, f/11, 1/125 sec., ISO 100.
