Hooker Valley, named for the Hooker River, is the gateway to Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, home to the highest mountains and the longest glaciers in New Zealand. The park is a rugged land of ice and rock, with 19 peaks over 3,000 meters, including New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki/Mount Cook.

Mount Sefton, at an elevation of 3,151 m / 10,337 ft, dominates the left side of this photo with its many glaciers. Elusive on this particular morning, Aoraki/Mount Cook, with its peak hidden in the clouds, stands at an elevation of 3,754 m / 12,316 ft and is the highest mountain in New Zealand. It lies in the Southern Alps, the mountain range that runs the length of the South Island. A popular tourist destination, it is also a favorite challenge for mountain climbers. Aoraki/Mount Cook consists of three summits lying slightly south and east of the main divide: Low Peak, Middle Peak, and High Peak, with the Tasman Glacier to the east and the Hooker Glacier to the west. Director Peter Jackson used this distinctive location numerous times in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies.

This image was photographed with a Canon 5DSR at f/11, using bracketed exposures of 1/50th, 1/125th, and 1/20th sec., ISO 100. The panorama is made up of 51 HDR images arranged in 3 rows × 17 columns, with approximately 33% overlap in portrait orientation.

  • Standard Plaque prints are available in four finish choices. Finishes are acid-free and ultraviolet (UV) light protected, shielding them against fading and deterioration, and can be wiped down with water or ammonia-free cleaners.
  • We highly recommend Metalized Paper for prints, plaques and PlexiPlaq products. This special paper does an excellent job of bringing out the detail in the photographs.
  • All of our plaques are produced by Duraplaq on photo-quality high-density boards. Numerous mounting styles and edge treatments are available.
  • Approximate lead time for shipping prints is two to three weeks. Plaque mounts and other options are approximately three to four weeks.
