July 28, 2026 — Long before mountain men and wagon wheels followed the trails across western Wyoming, Native peoples knew the high country around Union Pass. For generations, these mountains were hunting grounds, travel corridors and summer homes.

When the lower country turned hot and dry, people and game moved toward the cool, well-watered mountains. Deer, elk and mountain sheep grazed the high meadows, while streams, ponds and forests provided water, food, firewood and shelter. Archaeological discoveries throughout the Wind River Mountains show that Native families established summer camps in the high country, continuing a tradition stretching back thousands of years.

This broad valley south of Union Pass still hints at what drew them here. Open meadows roll between stands of timber, small ponds reflect the Wyoming sky, and cool mountain water gathers in the wetlands.

Today the camps are gone and the old trails have grown faint. But stand quietly among these meadows, with the wind whispering through the sage and pines, and let your imagination carry you backward in time. Picture tepees scattered across the valley, their pale hides glowing in the evening light; thin ribbons of woodsmoke curling into the mountain air; horses grazing across the meadow and watering at the ponds; children playing near the lodges as hunters return from the surrounding hills. As twilight settles over Union Pass, there is the smell of woodsmoke on the breeze, the distant neigh of a horse—and somewhere beyond the next rise, the faint echoes of ancient drums rolling across the valley.
