On the Edge at Cape Royal Overlooking Wotans Throne
North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
Oct. 1, 2018, 5:45 p.m. — I photographed this panorama from Cape Royal on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, looking across the immense canyon landscape toward Wotans Throne, the prominent flat-topped formation dominating the center of the scene. Cape Royal offers one of the North Rim’s most expansive views, with layer after layer of cliffs, temples and distant canyon walls stretching toward the horizon. Storm clouds building over the distant South Rim added drama to the late-afternoon scene. Curtains of virga—rain falling from the clouds but evaporating before reaching the ground—can be seen beneath the storms in the distance.
For this photograph, however, the weather wasn’t the only thing that was dramatic. I had my tripod set up about six inches from the edge of a cliff with a drop of at least 1,000 feet. My wife Jean was very nervous and kept telling me to move back.
This panorama was photographed with a Canon 5DS R and a Canon 200mm lens at f/11, 1/80 sec., ISO 200. It was created from 138 individual photographs arranged in 6 rows × 23 columns.

- We highly recommend Metalized Paper for prints, plaques and PlexiPlaq products. This special paper does an excellent job of bringing out the detail in the photographs.
- All of our plaques are produced by Duraplaq on photo-quality high-density boards. Numerous mounting styles and edge treatments are available.
- Approximate lead time for shipping prints is two to three weeks. Plaque mounts and other options are approximately three to four weeks.
The above sizes and mounting options are a small subset of the overall mounting options we offer. Our photographs are available as traditional prints, framed prints, plaque mounts, aluminum prints and PlexiPlaq. We also offer Tri-Panel, Quad-Panel, Wall Clusters & Splits, and many of our gigapixel photographs are available as wall murals.
