Bryce Canyon Sunset Point

October 4, 2018, 3:32 PM. At the time it was created, this was the second-largest gigapixel panorama I had photographed. Sunset Point is one of the major overlooks of the Bryce Amphitheater, offering an expansive view across some of the park’s most distinctive hoodoos and colorful rock formations. The famous Thor’s Hammer formation lies below the viewpoint, along with the maze of hoodoos known as the Silent City. Sunset Point is also the trailhead for the Navajo Loop Trail, which descends from the rim into the amphitheater and connects with several of Bryce Canyon’s most popular hiking routes.

Mid-afternoon sunlight cast dramatic shadows across the hoodoos, revealing the intricate forms of the canyon and the hiking trails winding through it. On the right, a few small aspen trees were brilliant red with fall color.

This panorama was photographed with a Canon 5DS R and Canon 70–200mm lens at 200mm, using f/11, 1/50 second and ISO 200. The finished image was assembled from 168 individual photographs, captured as 6 rows × 28 columns with approximately 25% overlap.
