Auckland at Night

May 4, 2026 — We visited Kauri Point Centennial Park, across Waitematā Harbour from downtown Auckland, New Zealand, to photograph the city’s spectacular nighttime skyline.

From this vantage point, the illuminated container terminals and towering cranes of the Port of Auckland stretch across the waterfront, while the city’s downtown skyscrapers and distinctive Sky Tower rise against the evening sky. The warm lights of the port contrast beautifully with the cooler colors of the city skyline, and their reflections shimmer across the dark waters of the harbor.

One of the things I particularly enjoy about panoramic photography is the ability to capture an expansive scene while preserving the fine architectural details that would be difficult to appreciate in a conventional photograph. In this image, the individual buildings, port cranes and waterfront structures remain clearly distinguishable across the panorama.

Creating this photograph required 62 individual exposures arranged in a 2-row by 31-column array. I used my Canon EOS R5 Mark II with a Canon RF 100–400mm zoom lens set at 200mm, shooting at f/11, ISO 100 and a 30-second exposure for each frame. The resulting images were stitched together to produce a high-resolution panorama of Auckland’s waterfront at night.
