Athabasca Falls

Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

September 5, 2017 — On our way home from Alaska, we spent a day exploring the northern portion of Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. One of our stops was Athabasca Falls, where the powerful Athabasca River plunges through a narrow gorge carved into the surrounding bedrock.

Although Athabasca Falls is not particularly tall compared with some of the waterfalls in the Canadian Rockies, the tremendous volume and force of the water make it an impressive sight. The river rushes over the rocky ledge before disappearing into the deep gorge below, surrounded by rugged rock formations and dense evergreen forest. The mountains rising in the background complete this beautiful Canadian Rockies landscape.

I photographed the falls from an overlook that allowed me to capture the rushing water, the deep gorge and the surrounding mountain scenery in a single composition. The square format provides a balanced view of the landscape while preserving the fine details of the rocks, trees and flowing water.

The original panorama consists of 14 individual 42-megapixel photographs captured with a Sony a7R II at 45mm, f/11, 1/100 second and ISO 200, using a Canon 24–105mm zoom lens. The individual exposures were stitched together to produce the high-resolution photograph shown here.
