Sept. 27, 2020 on the Owl Creek Pass road. This is the True Grit filming location, the camping spot on Cow Creek , known as Deb’s Meadow, location of famous shootout scene at the end of the 1969 movie “True Grit” staring John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. This movie earned John Wayne his only Oscar. The late afternoon Golden Hour light paints the side of the 10,958-foot-high Chimney Peak and Court House Peak and sets the Aspens in their fall colors ablaze. One can almost hear John Wayne’s voice booming the famous line “Fill your hands, you son of a bitch!” across the clearing. In the lower right is a large boulder. This is the rock the Duke was next to when he and his horse was shot. Looking up, you’ll see Chimney Peak, which is what was above Robert Duvall’s head when he first entered the field. If you go back to the turn in, and face the road, to your left you will hear and see a small stream. This is the stream they camped next to. Follow the stream through the trees and you’ll find their stream side camping place.
