June 9, 2023. 6:15 AM. — This location in Arches National Park has always held a special meaning in my heart and has been on my bucket list of photo spots to capture a sunrise photo at for several years. I have titled this photo “The Valley of the Transfiguration” because it speaks to me of a story in the Bible that appears in Matthew 17, Mark 9 and Luke 9. The event recorded in all three Gospels, tells of Jesus taking Peter, James, and John with Him up to a “high mountain.” This unnamed mountain is what we call the Mount of Transfiguration today, because of what takes place next: “There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus”. In my mind I see the three tall pillars (commonly called the “Three Gossips” ) on the mountain on the left as Jesus, Moses and Elijah. They all seem to be looking at the formation to the right (commonly known as “Sheep Rock”) which in my mind represents the Lamb (Jesus) that was sacrificed on the cross of Calvary for our sins. The lamb stands between them and Court House Towers which I see as the judgment seat of God. I find it awesome that God would create formations in the deserts of Utah that so accurately depicts His provision for the forgiveness of our sins.
