During our fall 2024 photo tour we stayed in the Monument Valley area 5 nights. My goal during our stay in this area was to capture as many of the iconic locations in this area in Gigapixel sized images. One of the reasons I chose this location to shoot from is that there is no visible signs of man in the scene. No roads, no houses or anything but raw pure nature as it has existed for 1,000’s of years.
The West and East Mitten Buttes are two buttes in the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in northeast Navajo County, Arizona. When viewed from the south, the buttes appear to be two giant mittens with their thumbs facing inwards. The Mittens form a triangle with Merrick Butte on the right.
They are part of the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park notable for it’s stunning landscapes and unique geological formations. Made famous by the numerous Western movies shot in this area this view of the Mittens was shoot from the 17 mile road that loops through the park.
I shot this at around 4:30pm just before the sun’s rays started casting long shadows across the valley Using a 300mm telephoto lens, there were 2181 individual 45 megapixel images focus bracketed images used to create this shot. My Canon R5 settings were f/11, 1/800th sec. ISO 400.
