Ohh That Smell
Ooh, that smell
Can’t you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you!
The song “That Smell” by Lynyrd Skynyrd came out in October 1977. Its lyrics acutely speak to the dangerous (and often-fatal) risks of substance abuse, addiction and sexual perversion prevalent in the late ‘70’s.
The refrain above was repeated throughout the song. While I was never a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, (that wasn’t my style of music) for some strange reason yesterday, those words popped into my head as we were discussing with a friend, the degradation of our culture, especially within our young people. The conversation centered around how or why we are seeing such a huge increase in interest in the occult, immorality and wide acceptance of LGBT+ ideology amongst our youth.
In our conversation we were discussing how it seemed that Satan and his demonic forces have turned up the heat and are far more active in the past decade or two. In my mind I could envision hordes of demons flying out of the pits of Hell like bats leaving a cave as dusk. And the words “Ooh, that smell” immediately came to mind as the stench of burning, rotting flesh and death followed the hordes of demons. As I observe the degradation of our culture the words in the last line of the chores, “The smell of death surrounds you” speaks volumes of how as the Bible says, Satan goes about seeking to kill and destroy.
I truly believe that the youth our nation, and world, are under attack like never before by Satanic forces, the Principalities and Powers mentioned in Ephesians 6:12. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” The primary front in the battle being waged by the Principalities and Powers on our youth is in our schools, from pre-school right up through almost all of our colleges.
I challenge my fellow Christ Followers, we need to get off our pew warmers, stand up, take a deep breath and smell that smell. We are the Light of the World and if we don’t engage in the battle against the Principalities and Powers we are at risk of losing the entire next generation and all the generations that follow them.
