June 25, 2024 — The Lower Yellowstone Falls are viewed by park visitors form this vantage point probably more often than any other. Plunging 308 feet (94 m) the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River is the largest volume waterfall in the Rocky Mountains of the United States. With very easy access, this view is probably the most photographed view of the falls, bar none. Most anytime of day visitors are lined up 10-20 deep waiting to take their photos or selfies at this overlook.

At 2.6 Gigapixels this image is at least 65X the resolution of a DSLR camera or cell phone image. Uncle Tom’s Trail, which is a steep trail and stairway with a vertical descent of 500 feet (152 metres), about three quarters of the way down the side of the canyon, is clearly visible in the full sized version of this photo. This can be seen by clicking on the image to launch a 4 minute virtual tour of the image.

I shot this at around 9am just as the sun’s rays were reaching into bottom of the canyon. Using a 400mm telephoto lens, there were 211 individual 45 megapixel images used to create this shot. My Canon R5 settings were f/11, 1/400th sec. ISO 400.
