Lake Matheson Morning Fog

Lake Matheson, near the Fox Glacier in South Westland, New Zealand, is famous for its reflected views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. This Glorious morning at around 7:45 on January 8th 2019, the water was nearly glass smooth and a “Sea Smoke” fog drifted across it’s surface. The waters of Lake Matheson are dark brown, so on a calm day they create the ideal reflective surface. The color is caused by natural leaching of organic matter from the surrounding native forest floor. By a happy coincidence, the mountains to the east are perfectly positioned to reflect in the lake. Lake Matheson was formed when the Fox Glacier retreated from its last major advance towards the sea and left a depression which later filled with water.
Reflections — While shooting this photo I could not help but think about how God has created special places, on His home he created for us, that “reflects” His Glory. As you view this photo, meditate on His great love for mankind, that He gave His Son to die for us that we might spend eternity with Him in heaven. Scenes like this are but a window into what heaven will be like. Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you”… I can’t wait to see the beauty of what it is that He is preparing for us.
