This photo was taken at 5:55 PM, Dec. 22, 2016 about 10 minutes before the sun sat. A rain shower is moving in from the east and the westerly wind is carrying the smoke from the coldera to the west. This photo is take from the observation deck at Jaggar Museum, which is about a mile north of the celdera. Update — the Jagger Museum was nearly swallowed up by the collapse of the caldera during the Dec, 2017 eruptions. The museum is permanently closed. The reason behind this permanent closure is due to the instability of the caldera’s ledge, where the Jaggar Museum is located, which has been labeled by National Park Services geomorphologists as “extremely unstable.”
