Oct. 6, 2024. – We were at the entry gate at 8am ready to start our tour of the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. John Ford Point was one of my primary locations on my to-do list for the day. We were there on a Sunday so we were expecting a higher than normal number of visitors but being October, I was hopeful that it wouldn’t be too crowded. When we arrived we found dozens of cars, a couple of tour busses and many people walking out on the point. Every few minutes someone would hire the horse to have their photo taken on the point. I sat up my camera gear and waited, and waited. Once the tour busses left the number of people decreased. Once I got to the part of the image that included the point I had to stop and wait for people to move out of my shot. Right on cue, the horse and rider showed up and posed for his friends. I took advantage and included him in the shot. Between waiting numerous times and with some creative masking of people in the shots, I managed to get a full set of images where the only person in the shot was the one on the horse.

I shot this at 300mm focal length. The short distances to the nearby objects at the overlook required me to shoot the lower half of the using focus bracketing There are 1857 individual, mostly focus bracketed images yielding 240 images, 5 rows x 48 columns, used to stitch together this shot. My settings were f/11, 1/800th second and ISO 400.
