Hooker Valley, named for the Hooker River is the gateway to Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, home of the highest mountains and the longest glaciers in New Zealand. The park is a rugged land of ice and rock, with 19 peaks over 3000 meters including New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki/Mount Cook.

Mount Sefton, at an elevation: 3151 m / 10337 ft on left dominates this photo with it’s many glaciers. Evasive, Mount Cook, with it’s peak hidden in the clouds, standing proud at an elevation of 3754 m / 12316 ft is the highest mountain in New Zealand. It lies in the Southern Alps, the mountain range which runs the length of the South Island. A popular tourist destination, it is also a favorite challenge for mountain climbers. Aoraki / Mount Cook consists of three summits lying slightly south and east of the main divide, the Low Peak, Middle Peak and High Peak, with the Tasman Glacier to the east and the Hooker Glacier to the west. Director, Peter Jackson used this distinctive location numerous times in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies.
